    Health Care Town Hall

    TOPIC: Medicaid-Medicare and Our Failing Healthcare System: How this affects patients, hospitals, and providers

    SPEAKERS:

    • Doug Boysen - President and CEO of Samaritan Health Services (SHS) since 2018 SHS operates hospitals in Corvallis, Albany, Lebanon, Newport, and Lincoln City and provides other health services throughout Benton, Linn, and Lincoln Counties. Mr. Boysen will report on the many challenges that hospitals face and how we can protect our community hospitals.
    • Angel Harris - Registered nurse, former Linn-Benton NAACP President. Ms. Harris currently works as a racial equity consultant and as adjunct nursing faculty at Bushnell University where she teaches Population Health/Community Health NursingMs. Harris will address how our healthcare system adversely affects all members of our community, especially people of color. She will offer solutions for discussion.
    • Bruce Thomson MD - Retired Family Practice Doctor and Benton County Public Health Officer Dr. Thomson has been a long-time activist for health and social justice. He served as chair of the Mid-Valley Health Care Advocates Legislative Committee 2018-2020. Dr. Thomson will address how our healthcare system adversely affects providers and will offer solutions for discussion.

    Youth Civic Engagement Summit

    Empower Youth to Support Democracy!

    All Oregon League Members are invited to virtually attend the free Youth Civic Engagement Summit on Friday, January 19th between 10:00am and 3:00pm to learn how you can empower youth to support democracy in their communities!

    Join the event for in-person and virtual opportunities to:

    • Attend youth-led workshops on topics such as: Protest and Event Safety, Fighting Misinformation/Disinformation, Capacity Building and Longevity, and Community Building

    • Gain insight into forms of youth activism and how the League can support our younger members

    • Engage in dialogue with community members of all ages who are passionate about social change

    • Develop practical skills for promoting effective civic participation

    Both in-person and online virtual attendees will have Youth Council-facilitated workshop opportunities and we encourage any attendance to fit your schedule, though young and future voters will receive first priority for the limited in-person attendance.

    Know Your City: Finding Your Voice: Effective Participation in the Budget Process

    Have you been wondering how the city decides to spend your tax dollars and how you could impact their decisions? Join a citizen and councilor on the city Budget Commission and a staff member who participates in the budget’s preparation to get your questions answered on January 30.

    Getting Around in Corvallis: Improvements to the City’s Multi-Modal Transportation System 

    A lot has been or will be changing with the Corvallis Multi-Modal transportation system – new pedestrian and bicycle features, new multi-purpose paths and neighborhood bikeways, improved mass transit services, new future parking system for downtown and new Federal ADA requirements. Join the city’s Transportation Division Manager Roray Rowan and Transportation staff staff to learn about the changes on February 6.

    Soup Social and Priority Setting

    Dinner is on us in the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, Main Meeting Room.

    This annual gathering is your opportunity to set the coming year’s priorities, our basis for education and
    action. Come share a bowl of soup and reconnect with members of our local league. To prepare for the
    meeting, please review our national and local positions found on our website. Reflect on community
    issues that might benefit from our study or action.

    Your board members will provide delicious soups, bread and desserts. All you need to bring is your own
    bowl, plate, cup, and table utensils.
