Our Committee works to make sure local government policies and actions support the League’s position which calls for healthy, diverse, and inclusive communities where people can live, work, shop, and play, and that the environment is protected and the climate emergency addressed.
Our activities this year included the continuation of our Know Your City program for the 6th year. We sponsored two programs, Finding Your Voice: Effective Participation in the City Budget Process and Getting Around in Corvallis: Improvements to the City’s Multi-modal Transportation. A subcommittee worked with the Climate Change Committee and Wendy Bryne to submit items to the city’s Strategic Operational Plan for public participation in land use decisions and managing the city public right-of-way through ordinance rather than franchises. Rory Rowan, Corvallis Transportation Manager met with us on multi-modal transportation. Joe Stack, ODFW Regional Biologist met with us on wildlife corridors.
For the new year, we currently plan to focus on changes to land use requirements coming from the state, including middle housing, Climate Friendly and Equitable Communities, 2024 SB1537 Accelerating Housing Production and potential 2025 legislation. We also want to focus on how land use intersects with climate change and the need for adaptation and resiliency.
