    Forum on Public Banking

    The League of Women Voters invites you to learn about public banking in an interactive Zoom forum on Monday, November 13, at 6:30 pm. Rick Staggenborg, a member of both the League and Oregon Public Banking Alliance, will lead the discussion. 

    Public banking is an issue that Oregonians will be hearing a lot more about in the near future. In its last session, the Oregon legislature passed a bill to establish a task force on how best to implement, operate, and govern an Oregon state bank. Although the governor vetoed the bill, she affirmed her support for the concept. Supporters are expected to introduce a revised bill in the next session.

    A state bank is one whose charter requires it to serve the interests of the people of the state. An Oregon state bank could lend its available capital only for projects that benefit Oregon and Oregonians, according to priorities set in its state-issued charter. This would keep the money in the state for such purposes as low-interest loans for infrastructure projects, clean-energy projects, and affordable housing, and loans to farmers, students, and minority-owned businesses.

    How Are They Making an Impact? Youth Leaders Speak Out

    Nov 27th program to feature high school and college students engaged in government.

    The public is invited to this special program.

    Four speakers will share their thoughts and experiences as students engaged in government. The program will provide an opportunity for audience members to hear directly from youth leaders. They will cover:

    • How have they participated in government at their schools and/or in the wider community?
    • What motivates them to take action?
    • What topics are of special interest to them?
    • What successes and challenges have they experienced?
    • What are their hopes and fears about their generations’ future, and what are they doing to shape their future?

    • Mary Parmigiani, Corvallis High School student and member of the Benton County Talks Trash Workgroup
    • Lithia Foultner, Legislative Affairs Director, LBCC Student Leadership Council
    • Carissa O’Donnell, President of the Associated Students of OSU
    • Evan Tucker, Youth Voter Strategist, LWVOR Youth Council

    Following brief presentations by each of the panelists, there will be plenty of time for audience questions. This program will be available both in person and via Zoom.

    What is the Proposed Civic Campus?

    Corvallis City Manager Mark Shepard will present an overview of the City’s proposed Civic Campus and respond to questions. Why does the proposal include the demolition of City Hall? How will this $49 million project be funded? How does the Civic Campus fit into the broader City facility needs assessment?     SPEAKERS:

    • Doug Boysen - President and CEO of Samaritan Health Services (SHS) since 2018 SHS operates hospitals in Corvallis, Albany, Lebanon, Newport, and Lincoln City and provides other health services throughout Benton, Linn, and Lincoln Counties. Mr. Boysen will report on the many challenges that hospitals face and how we can protect our community hospitals.
    • Angel Harris - Registered nurse, former Linn-Benton NAACP President. Ms. Harris currently works as a racial equity consultant and as adjunct nursing faculty at Bushnell University where she teaches Population Health/Community Health Nursing. Ms. Harris will address how our healthcare system adversely affects all members of our community, especially people of color. She will offer solutions for discussion.
    • Bruce Thomson MD - Retired Family Practice Doctor and Benton County Public Health Officer Dr. Thomson has been a long-time activist for health and social justice. He served as chair of the Mid-Valley Health Care Advocates Legislative Committee 2018-2020. Dr. Thomson will address how our healthcare system adversely affects providers and will offer solutions for discussion.

    Youth Civic Engagement Summit

    Empower Youth to Support Democracy!

    All Oregon League Members are invited to virtually attend the free Youth Civic Engagement Summit on Friday, January 19th between 10:00am and 3:00pm to learn how you can empower youth to support democracy in their communities!

    Join the event for in-person and virtual opportunities to:

    • Attend youth-led workshops on topics such as: Protest and Event Safety, Fighting Misinformation/Disinformation, Capacity Building and Longevity, and Community Building

    • Gain insight into forms of youth activism and how the League can support our younger members

    • Engage in dialogue with community members of all ages who are passionate about social change

    • Develop practical skills for promoting effective civic participation

    Know Your City: Finding Your Voice: Effective Participation in the Budget Process

    Getting Around in Corvallis: Improvements to the City’s Multi-Modal Transportation System 

    A lot has been or will be changing with the Corvallis Multi-Modal transportation system – new pedestrian and bicycle features, new multi-purpose paths and neighborhood bikeways, improved mass transit services, new future parking system for downtown and new Federal ADA requirements. Join the city’s Transportation Division Manager Roray Rowan and Transportation staff staff to learn about the changes on February 6.
