DEQ HEARING ON DRAFT CLEANER AIR RULES
Monday, November 20, 2017
5:30 – 8 PM
Walnut Community Room
4950 NW Fair Oaks Dr. Corvallis
LWVOR is pleased that the draft rules broadly cover areas of air quality that haven’t been regulated. The first chart in the Draft Rules Tables gives you important numbers for the amount of allowable emissions for various categories of emissions sources. In that chart, the allowable number of people per million that can die from cancer caused by toxic emission from existing factories has been increased from 1 person per million, the number in force in California, to 500 people per million. And the Hazard Index related to chronic non-cancer diseases for existing factories has increased from 1 to 30 for the new rules. We think these numbers are not health-based. The timeline to bring all companies under the Cleaner Air Oregon tent is long. Only 80 companies will be included in the first five years. The Department of Environmental Quality has not gotten enough funding to hire necessary personnel to enact the new rules or to finish a vital statewide emissions inventory. Cleaner Air Oregon cannot happen without funding and political will.
We need as many people as possible to testify either in writing or orally. Two paragraphs, one about your story of how dirty air affects you and a paragraph supporting strong health and science based air regulations would help get us cleaner air.
Or you can comment to Joe Westersund and you can comment online at the Cleaner Air Oregon website at cleanerair.oregon.gov.
