The Housing Committee’s annual program on March 18 was well attended. We did hear from some attendees that they had difficulty hearing parts of the presentations—helpful feedback that reminds us to ask our speakers to speak up.

Our follow-up program on April 1 was sparsely attended, though those who came were quite engaged. In retrospect, it may have been better to fold this follow-up into the LWV series at Common Fields.

An issue that continues to gain traction is how to provide shelter for those who cannot access transitional housing or, for a variety of reasons, are unable to access the existing shelters in the community. Some advocates support managed camping options, while the city and others are focused on moving people into permanent or transitional housing or encouraging use of designated camping areas.

It is our hope that everyone has a place to call home. In the meantime, many people remain unsheltered for much of the day. Even those who can access shelters or designated camping areas are typically limited to hours between 6:00 pm and 9:00 am, leaving them without a place to stay during the day.

Our committee is discussing options such as Four Square Village in Lane County, which offers a range of housing options, including tiny homes, and appears to be quite successful. Models like this are often led by private-sector organizations working in partnership with local governments. If this is an area you’re interested in or knowledgeable about, please let me know.

In addition to exploring ways to provide shelter for those who are unhoused, the committee is also looking at ways to equip people with the tools needed to become first-time homeowners.

The Housing Committee is interested in all aspects of housing. While much of our focus has been on unsheltered individuals, we are also committed to increasing the housing supply in Corvallis. A vibrant, diverse community depends on a range of housing options. If these topics interest you, please contact me.
