SUMMARY:Child Care Consensus Meeting: Session 2 of 2
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an important League process – reviewing the Child Care study and sharing your opinion so that LWVOR can create a position on Child Care. \nAt Convention 2021\, LWV of Washington County proposed a restudy of child care. Child care concerns have changed dramatically since our 1988 – Child Care In Oregon publication. Our advocacy position has not changed.  \nDownload the new study Caring for Our Children here.  \nLeague of Women Voters of Oregon is seeking consensus from local leagues across the state in order to develop an updated position.  Note: Consensus means a general agreement by members\, not a strict voting process. \nRead the study and mark your calendar to make your opinion count by attending one of the meetings we have planned to discuss the consensus questions: \n\nTuesday\, November 12th at 7:00 PM at the home of Connie Bozarth (conboz@comcast.net) or\nTuesday\, November 19th at 10:00 AM at the home of Ann Schauber (annschauber@gmail.com). \n\nEXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF THE NEW STUDY \nAn effective childcare system benefits the entire economy. In Oregon\, we have not done a good job of prioritizing child care needs and developing a strategic\, coordinated childcare plan. Usually\, the term “child care” suggests a picture of preschoolers in a classroom. This is quite different from the reality of what today’s parents need so they can make ends meet and contribute to society. More Information \nConsensus Questions

SUMMARY:Undivide Us Movie Showing
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters of Corvallis is pleased to host a screening of “Undivide Us” – an award-winning documentary that is being shown and discussed in towns and cities throughout the country. Plan to join us on Wednesday\, September 18\, at 7 pm at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library to watch the film and participate in a follow-up discussion. \n“Undivide Us” challenges the idea that citizens who disagree are not capable of civil conversation and demonstrates the truth that\, even in our differences\, the American experiment is still alive and well. The film features six focus groups in three American cities\, exploring perceived polarization and uncovering the potential for healing conversation\, mutual respect\, and democracy at its best. \nTo learn more about the film and to watch the trailer\, click here. \nWe look forwarding to seeing you on September 18th!

SUMMARY:Event: What's Up With Coffin Butte Landfill?
DESCRIPTION:Shining a Light on the Issues\n \nSeptember 28\, 7:00-8:45 pm \nCorvallis-Benton County Public Library & Zoom\n \n\nZoom Link\nIf calling in: +1 206 337 9723 & Webinar ID: 878 9938 0914\n\n“Since World War II\, the southern end of Coffin Butte in north Benton County\, Oregon\, has served as a\nsolid waste dump site in one form or another. Over time\, the site has changed and grown – beginning as a rock quarry\, then a U.S Army garbage dump/burn pile\, Coffin Butte now serves as a full-scale regional\nlandfill serving dozens of communities in western Oregon and Washington. While the site has changed\nand grown over time\, Benton County has not adopted a plan for managing the site or the waste left there\nover the decades.” – From Executive Summary\, Benton County Talks Trash \nIn September 2022\, “Benton County Talks Trash” kicked off an 8-month public workgroup process\, forming five subcommittees to seek common understandings of the history\, land use\, legal issues\, and future of solid waste at the landfill\, and to develop a long-term sustainable materials management and community education plan. The result was the Benton County Talks Trash Solid Waste Process Report – a report including findings and recommendations to support decision-making about the future of solid waste in Benton County. \nThe League has invited six community members who served on the Benton County Talks Trash Subcommittees to share their perspectives. \n\nWhat did they learn about the history of the landfill?\nWhat were their findings and recommendations?\nWhat lies ahead for dealing with waste in Benton County?\n\nSPEAKERS\n\nCatherine Biscoe – Introduction\nMark Yeager – History of Coffin Butte Landfill\nPaul Nietfeld – Landfill Size\, Capacity\, and Longevity\nEd Pitera – Past Land Use Conditions\nJohn Deuel – Sustainable Materials Management Plan\nMary Parmigiani – Community Education & Public Outreach\n\nThe goal of the League’s September program is to provide a basic overview of the Workgroup’s process\, an opportunity to identify community concerns\, and to outline Benton County’s future plans for waste management. (NOTE: The program will not be about landfill expansion.) \nDon’t miss this important event!
